The challenge

Exhibition halls, a large convention centre, atriums and service cores gave the openings very different shapes and sizes.

The brief called for wide smoke barriers, compact fire curtains for the lift lobbies, drops of up to 16.5 metres, a curved boundary of about 100 metres, and installation in phases.

At that width a door was never an option: the boundary had to stay open for crowds and close only when the alarm calls for it.

Drawn to scale

The curtain against one person 1.7 metres tall. Look for the small black figure at the left foot of the curtain.

Drawn flat. On site the run follows a curve and is built from several bays that act as one system.

Almost twelve people stacked head to toeCloser: a 6 metre slice of the same 20 metre drop, with the same person beside it.
